How can connected solutions help to support the elderly and vulnerable?

As we currently find ourselves in an epidemic, the top priority is lockdown! We are strongly advised to avoid all gatherings, limit travel and physical contact. But in these times of crisis, what happens to our loved ones, the elderly or the vulnerable, who are forced to stay at home or in their care homes, in total isolation, in order to protect themselves from possible contamination?

Although this state of quarantine seems absolutely essential in the current context, it fuels our concerns about our elderly and isolated relatives.

At a time when monitoring vulnerable people is of paramount importance, we must remember that technology never fails to surprise us.

Since 2013, Telegrafik has been developing Smart Care connected solutions to accompany the elderly and frail in their daily lives and support professionals working in the sector. These are innovative technologies designed to help people age well, whether at home, in senior residences or in nursing homes.

To date, more than 4,000 people have benefited from these connected telecare solutions which have been fitted in 25 nursing homes.

How does it work for individuals?

Discreet sensors are installed in your loved one’s home, which is neither filmed nor listened to, because Telegrafik makes people’s privacy their top priority. In the event of unusual behaviour, the system immediately alerts an assistance platform, which will in turn contact a relative of the person concerned. Knowing that the first cause of death among the elderly is falls, Otono-me allows the beneficiary to be rescued in time.

Thanks to Otono-me, you benefit from a complete monitoring of your loved one’s activities via the application: you can check at a glance if they are still at home or not, you are informed of their meal times and you also follow their sleeping patterns.

“I am so grateful to the Otono-me service, because thanks to them I was quickly taken care of when I had a stroke…I’m delighted because the sensors were very reactive and it’s thanks to this that I don’t have any paralysis today,” confides Colette, 73 years old.

When your loved one experiences a sudden lifestyle change, Otono-me detects it automatically. An alert is sent to the support platform which will contact them to check that everything is ok. “We enable older people to stay independent and safe for longer,” says Carole Zisa-Garat, president and founder of Telegrafik.

In Senior Residences and Nursing homes

Telegrafik has adapted its solutions so that they can be easily installed in an existing building or integrated into new builds. The Otono-me Résidences solution more effectively keeps vulnerable people living alone in a residence safe while reassuring their loved ones. They are kept up to date with everything that is happening via a simple, practical and customisable application. “When my father doesn’t answer the phone, I look at my app and I’m reassured” said Jean, a resident’s son.

Otono-me Résidences also makes it possible to support the staff in the establishment by reducing turnover. In the event of any abnormal activity, they are immediately informed and sent help if necessary. Vigilance alerts are automatically sent in case of deterioration. An Extranet is made available to them in order to guarantee better support for residents on a daily basis.

In care homes, Telegrafik’s connected solutions make it possible to keep the residents safe by automatically alerting the nursing staff in the event of a dangerous situation. “Half of all night-time falls are not screened in nursing homes. The video-vigilance device reduces the rate of serious falls by 47%”, confirms Prof. Dantoine, head of la Chaire.

Bed occupancy sensors can also be installed to detect and warn staff when a resident leaves the bed for an abnormally long period of time.

Alerts are logged and made available to the health executive and the coordinating physician, which allows the implementation of standard operating procedures to prevent falls and to quickly identify risk factors for falls on a case-by-case basis.

Otono-me EDAO EHPAD is the only solution for detecting falls and dangerous situations to have been validated by a Hospital Clinical Research Program.

Innovative technologies proven by beneficiaries and caregivers

Telegrafik’s connected solutions are focused on ensuring safety by automatically detecting unusual behaviour from the beneficiary, which has saved lives. They also guarantee peace of mind, since 83% of beneficiaries say they have been reassured since the service was installed. They also strengthen the social link because the monitoring process via the application promotes contact between the beneficiary and the carers.

During the current epidemic, Telegrafik’s connected solutions bring real added value by supporting the elderly or vulnerable in their daily lives in order to guarantee their safety and to reassure their loved ones. During this quarantine period, all of Telegrafik’s technical teams are working to ensure that services continue to operate as normal.
